Wedding Lingerie - A Buyer's Guide
1) When Should I Buy My Wedding Underwear?
In an ideal scenario you should buy 6–8 weeks before your wedding. This will ensure that you will have enough time to:
- Receive the items and try everything on for size.
- If necessary, you can still exchange or source an alternative product.
- You can wear your underwear to your dress fittings which means that the dressmaker can adjust your wedding the gown correctly
- This also avoids a last-minute panic purchase or paying extra for an urgent delivery.
Timing | Action | Benefits |
3/4 months prior | Research different styles. You will have had your first dress fitting by now so think about – neckline, back and fabric requirements. | This will ensure that you know the ideal style and shape of bra that you need. |
6/8 weeks prior | Buy your wedding lingerie. This will include bra, plus size briefs, stockings or tights, suspender belt & shapewear. | You MUST wear the underwear to your second dress fitting and so the dress is adjusted to fit you exactly. |
4/6 weeks prior | Buy your wedding night & honeymoon lingerie. | Slightly less time critical but still allows time for delivery & exchanges. |
2/3 weeks prior | Complete outfit try on. Dress, shoes and underwear. | Make sure you are ultra comfortable. You will be wearing this outfit ALL day! |
1 week prior | Get everything packed and ready. Ensure straps and closures are all in good order. | You do not want any last-minute hiccups. |
Additional considerations
- Golden Rule! Ensure you buy your wedding lingerie BEFORE your second dress fitting and not after the final fitting. If you leave your underwear until AFTER your dress is finished, you are highly likely to have fitting issues on your wedding day and you will not be at all comfortable on the most important day of your life.
- Exceptional circumstances you may need to buy earlier. Such as
- i) For custom made lingerie buy 3/4 months ahead
- ii) Plus Size or Extra Small sizes – Allow for longer lead times.
- iii) UK Summer season – This is the most popular time for a wedding and so everything will be slower due to the sheer volume of activity.
- iv) Body changes. If you expect any changes to your body shape, such as diet, maternity, surgery or illness, you should wait until 4/6 weeks before your wedding.
When NOT to buy wedding lingerie
- More than 4 months ahead. Your body shape may well change and also you will be unable to try the lingerie at your dress fitting.
- Less than 2 weeks before your wedding. You will have no time for exchanges, and you may have to pay urgent shipping charges. And of course, there’s no guarantee your underwear will fit inside your dress.
Summary
- Buy wedding day lingerie early (6/8 weeks prior) and bring to all dress fittings from the second one onwards.
- Buy wedding night and honeymoon underwear 4/6 weeks before your wedding.
- AVOID buying too early or too late!
2) How to Choose Wedding Lingerie
- Firstly, think about your wedding dress, as everything else stems from this. The neckline, back style, body shape, colour and even the material will all be a factor in determining exactly what underwear will be best for you.
- It’s really important to match your bra style to the neckline and back style of your dress.
Dress feature | Suggested Wedding Lingerie |
Strapless or Sweetheart | Strapless Bra, Longline Bustier or Bodysuit with silicone grip |
Deep V neck | Plunge Bra or Low Cut Bra with adhesive cups |
Low Back or Open Back | Low Back Bustier, Low Back Bodysuit, Convertible Bra or Backless Bra with adhesive cups |
Off The Shoulder or Halterneck | Multi-way or Convertible Bra with detachable straps |
Built In Cups or Boning | Often no bra at all! |
- Match your underwear to your dress silhouette and fabric.
- Fitted Dress or Mermaid style. Choose a Seamless Bodysuit or high-waisted briefs with smooth edges that will not be visible.
- A-line / Ballgown. Select a Minimiser Bra plus seamless briefs. Maybe a shaping slip will also provide comfort as well.
- Delicate and light or sheer fabrics such as silk, crepe or chiffon. Make sure you go for skin-tone or nude material as white will show through!
- Heavy or very structured fabrics. Only light or gentle smoothing out garments should be required.
3) What Colour Wedding Underwear Should I choose?
You should try & avoid the cardinal sin that most bride’s make regarding their underwear. Most bride’s think their lingerie should match the colour of their dress. But this is absolutely NOT the case. Always choose the colour of your wedding lingerie that matches your skin tone – No exceptions!
For example, white or ivory (the most popular choices) will actually show through light or sheer garments creating unsightly but clearly visible lines and shadows.
So, for complete invisibility always choose lingerie that is nude coloured or as close to your natural skin tone as possible.
4) What Size Bridal Lingerie Do I Need?
- The first thing to say is don’t guess! You should always measure yourself before buying and do not just assume your usual size will be OK. If you need help measuring your bust – Click here.
- Be aware that sizing varies quite dramatically between different brands. In addition, bridal lingerie is often made from less stretchy fabric. So measure both your band (under bust) and over bust at the fullest point. Click here for more help with checking your bra size.
- If at all possible, try THREE sizes per style. That is one band up and cup down plus one band down and cup up as well as your estimated size.
- Mobility. Can you move around comfortably? Sit down, stand up, bend over, raise both arms, walk around and of course dance! If your underwear digs into your body or has gaps or rides up, it is the wrong size.
- As mentioned above always buy at least a month before your wedding so that you have time to exchange for another size.
5) Which Fabric Is Best For Wedding Underwear?
- Here comfort and practicality are of paramount importance.
- Always prioritize breathability, so cotton-lined gussets are a good choice plus breathable microfiber or stretch lace. If possible, try and avoid heavy full-body shapewear especially for a summer wedding or for warm venues and locations.
- In terms of compression shapewear, if possible, choose light or moderate rather than firm or inflexible compression. Rigid underwear will definitely become uncomfortable and possibly painful by the end of the evening.
- Practical details to consider. Go for an open crotch or snap gusset to facilitate the call of nature. Also, you should only consider shapewear that ends well above your dress hem when sitting down.
- Think of this situation as two separate solutions. One set for functional and practical during the day and one romantic set for your wedding night and honeymoon.
6) Buying Wedding Underwear Summary
- Check if your wedding dress already has built-in cups or boning — you may not actually need a bra!
- Your underwear should match your skin tone, NOT your dress.
- Ensure all edges are seamless and ideally laser-cut with no visible lines.
- Your Bra style should exactly mirror your neckline & back cut.
- Try sitting down, dancing, raising arms and bending over in your dress and underwear before making a final decision.
- If at all possible, order/buy at least 4 weeks before your wedding and bring all of your underwear to your final dress fitting.
- Never forget COMFORT — You will be wearing this outfit for the whole day.
- Think about wearing wedding underwear as two completely separate occasions:
i) Ceremony / Wedding Breakfast - Invisible, supportive, seamless — there to highlight your beautiful wedding dress.
ii) Reception / Wedding night – Intimate, beautiful and romantic, personal — purely for you and your partner.
